Oneida Flatware A Company History



Oneida Ltd. is one of the world's largest producers and marketers of silverware, with a variety of desktop products they market in the world. Some of their products include sterling silverware, china, porcelain, crystal and glass. Oneida was founded in New York State in 1848 by John Humphrey Noyes. The interesting thing about this company is that they actually started out as a community founded on the theology of perfectionism Noyes, who was a brand of Christianity that held to the values of self-improvement and regionalism.

The community of shared ownership and supported the "marriage" complex "model" where monogamy was not regarded as the norm. All children were raised by members of the community from the age of two years until the age of 12. It was this system of education that allowed adult members of the community to undertake the manufacture of animal traps, chains, items in silk, and silver knives, forks and spoons.

It was through the production of those goods that the Oneida Community has earned a reputation of being the creators of quality merchandise, and a community of believers. It was the business of manufacturing and sale of items that allowed the community to persist for longer than most communities of the 19 States. But in 1870 the community divided by conflicts over doctrinal issues, and became two separate entities. It was then that the Oneida Community was transformed into a limited company to be owned and operated by some members of the community.

For fifteen years after the reorganization, the Company's financial situation deteriorated Oneida and a depression in the 1890s treated the company more financial challenges. Finally, in 1984, Pierrepont Burt Noyes, who was the son of John Humphrey, returned to the company after working as an Oneida wholesaler outside the community. It was this experience outside the community that gave him the vision to rebuild the struggling company. Following a fight with some of the idealists of the community, the company finally came together under the leadership Pierrepont Burt.

At age 30, he rose to take complete control of the Company in Oneida and Oneida 1904 he established emphasis on brand recognition and marketing, and increased the company's budget to promote their products to the world. Since then, the company continued to progress and grow to build their brand and improve production technologies.

Today Oneida is one of the leading designers and marketers of stainless steel cutlery, which is a component of the assignment of the Oneida.
